“The Harp”, 1939

Augusta Savage’s sculpture was inspired by the lyrics of James Weldon Johnson’s poem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Standing at sixteen feet, it was Savage’s largest sculpture.

Lift Every Voice and Sing
– By James Weldon Johnson

Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of hope that the present has brought us.
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won…

Today let’s celebrate Juneteenth; also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day by continuing to educate ourselves on the matters of black lives and the dark, painful history they have had to endure throughout the world.

How do you speak to bias and bigotry?
Start by
having the first conversation at
your own kitchen table
The world will say to you:
there is too much hate.
Devote yourself to love
love yourself
so much that you can love others
without barriers
and without judgement.

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!

I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.
― Edna St. Vincent Millay

Why do we no longer crave the simple pleasures in life?
For me, I can’t think of any better way to spend a Sunday afternoon…
than just lying on a hill, in a field of flowers with quiet eyes, drinking it all in.
